BUDDHA’S VISIT TO MAHIYANGANA

One of the most beautiful murals among the twentieth century
series of Kelaniya, painted by Solias Mendis. The panel depicts the Buddha having sat under a tree and created a fire surrounding his person by miraculous power.

The resident yakshas being frightened by the miracle are seen running away from the site in all directions. The painting style is evidently a new expression created by the artist with the long experience gained by his acquaintance with the classical paintings of India and Sri Lanka.
